Blindness to Things You Should See
Dec. 29th, 2010 12:45 amIt wasn't the first time that Yuri had done something stupid and Flynn had come to his rescue. This also wasn't the first time that Flynn had ended up taking his lumps in order for Yuri to finish something. It wouldn't be the last that either of these happened either.
But it was a first that Flynn hadn't been able to get up after taking a beating meant for his best friend, and it was the first time that Yuri realized things had been taken too far.
“It's all your fault!”
“I know.”
“If he doesn't wake up, how do you plan to take responsibility for this Yuri Lowell?!” Sodia's hand gripped on the hilt of her sword as she stared at the long haired male standing in front of the door of the Commandant of knights. In front of the door of her direct superior, and he was the one that had put him in this situation.
The air was tense in the situation, with all the chaos the knights needed a new leader. They needed Flynn. No one else would be able to put things right in quite the same way. Sodia knew it, but Yuri knew that even better than she did.
“If he doesn't wake up-”
“I. Know.” Gritting his teeth Yuri rested his forehead against his forearm on the doorway as his brows creased. I know.
Stepping outside the room, Estelle smiled although it wavered. Without the use of Blastia, without the use of any other help she had been tending to the other without fail. After all, his room was in the castle, so it was just easier for her to do it. “He's doing better. I think all that we can do now is let him rest and hope he comes around soon.”
Soon. That was the word that everyone had on their tongue. Soon they needed to start on the restructuring of the knights. With or without Flynn, soon had become a word that everyone had been uttering. The only reason it wasn't now was because the person that would have said it was in no shape to do so.
“I'm going in.”
“Hey! You shouldn't approach him so casually!” Sodia objected, but as Yuri moved in, he slammed the door shut in her face startling her and Estelle both. Reaching for the handle of the door, Sodia was stopped by a gentle gloved hand on her wrist. Looking back at Estellise, Sodia drew back and moved to the other side of the hall.
The former candidate for the throne moved to stand in front of her, was there anything that she could say? She'd have to try, “I know that you may not like Yuri all that much, but they have a connection that neither one of us can understand...Trust in Yuri, Sodia.”
Gritting her teeth, all Sodia could do was nod.
Raven sighed leaning back his arms behind his head as he tipped the chair back and forth on two legs and looked at the ceiling, “How did I get stuck with this job. I'm not a knight.”
“Well until Flynn comes back we all have to pitch in.” Karol spoke as he looked between each page of the documents, wrinkling his nose.
“What is this stuff? Do Commandants really need to keep watch over ALL of this?”
“That's the reason I'm not a knight. Well, just a couple of the hundred. Paper work piled as high as the eye can see.” Waving a few stray papers in his hand as he dropped down onto the floor with all four of his chair legs.
“That's why that kiddo needs to pull through this, I don't wanna do all this paper work.”
Karol shook his head, “But from what Estelle was saying-”
“Doesn't matter Karol. Yuri and Flynn have been in tougher situations than this. We just gotta trust em' to pull through each in their own way.”
“Yuri...” Karol's shoulders sunk, and Raven shook his head. Some things just couldn't be fixed. He just hoped that this wasn't one of those situations.
Inside the room, Yuri drug over a chair and sat down, both of his hands clenched into his pants as he stared at his friends prone body on the sheets. It hurt. This hurt too much for him to even care that there were countless people that probably hated him. It had just been one misstep and here Flynn was.
The blade had been small, something that Yuri hadn't been expecting. “How could I have known something like this was going to happen?”
He had made one off hand remark about Alexei in general. He hadn't known that there had been some of his supporters and subordinates in the area. Someone had over heard the remark and come at him with a knife. Flynn had pushed him out of the way, just like at Zaude. But, unlike that time it was a stab and Flynn hadn't been able to get medical attention until Yuri had drug him back up to the castle.
By that time, he hadn't realized his friend was in bad shape or that the blade had been poisoned.
“If I hadn't of opened my mouth none of this would have happened. It should be me laying there, not you.”
Flynn didn't answer. Yuri didn't expect him to.
Instead the long haired hero quietly reached out taking his friends hand into his own as he squeezed that clammy hand and held it between his. Brow furrowed and lips turned down into a severe frown he shook the hand a little, “Wake up dammit! We're all waiting on you!”
Still nothing. Flynn continued to sleep and Yuri sighed as he leaned forward putting his forehead against the clean sheets. “Damn it Flynn. You promised!”
Another week passed. Still no sign that the other would wake up, and Yuri had enough.
Standing in the doorway as Estellise was in the room once more, Yuri stared at his best friend. He hadn't moved, hadn't changed. Neither had Yuri. But, it had been a week and at this point the world was moving on. Raven and Karol had gone back to Dahngrest after things had calmed down at the capital. Ioder had appointed someone to take care of things with the knights until Flynn had woken up, but there was still work to be done.
Shutting the door behind her as she came out, Estelle brushed off her skirt and bit her lower lip.
“What are you planning to do now, Yuri?”
“Why do you think I'm planning to do anything? Someone has to look after that idiot as he recovers.”
“I know you Yuri, and you have that look in your eyes.”
Putting a hand on his hip, Yuri gave a small tired smile showing the cracking in the cool mask he usually kept on. “Oh? Well I guess I can't hide anything from you Estelle.”
“Is this about that promise that you and Flynn have?” The young woman asked quietly.
Yuri looked towards the door was a hard look. “Yeah. It is.”
“I'm sure he'd understand.”
“Yeah, he would. Flynn's like that.” Sighing he brushed a hand and mussed up the hair at the back of his scalp.
“I just can't wait anymore.”
With that he turned on his heel and moved down the hallway. “I'll make sure to take good care of him until he wakes up! Leave it to me.”
“I will then. Make sure he doesn't strain himself too much. I'm going to visit Rita and ask her if she might know of a way to shock him out of this. But, if he wakes up before that lemme know.”
There were all sorts of things that needed to be taken care of. Yuri paused in mid stride, bit his inner cheek, and forced himself to keep going.
Is this how you felt when you had to leave me for dead in the waters at Zaude?
With that last thought, he exited the castle and made his way to the lower quarter to fetch Repede and get ready.
